Moomiyo (Mumie) Review: The “Russian Black Anabolic”

Moomiyo is the Russian version of Indian Shilajit (reviewed here). Known also as “Russian Black Anabolic,” moomiyo (or “mumie” as it is sometimes called) has been used for years in Russia to enhance athletic and physical performance.

Moomiyo is said to help build muscle mass and strength and to shorten recovery time after strenuous exercise. It has been used as a performance enhancer for athletes, military personnel and cosmonauts.

It is also used in Russian folk medicine ever since to treat people with a range of conditions, including broken bones, stomach problems, inflammatory conditions and impotence.

Moomiyo is said to boost the immune system and enhance the metabolism of minerals needed for physical performance.

The unique properties of moomiyo are believed to be due to the characteristics of the soil in the region in Russia in which the substance develops. Plants high in alkaloids, glycosides, saponins, chlorophyll, carotenes and flavinoids flourish in the mountains of Russia.

Moomiyo is actually a thick, syrup-like substance that forms on rock. It is created by the various plants that grow in the surrounding area and is extremely high in minerals and other nutrients. Moomiyo forms infrequently and is therefore highly valued. In fact, it can take up to a month to collect a kilogram raw moomiyo.

Russian athletes who use moomiyo report an ability to increase training loads by rates of 15-27%, which is considered very significant. In addition, moomiyo appears to prevent hormone disorders related to age. For this reason, it is highly recommended for athletes over age forty. Moomiyo appears to be very effective in reducing inflammation and alleviating joint pain in bodybuilders as well.

Western athletes are now discovering moomiyo, which was brought to the U.S. by Russian scientists in the early 1990’s. It is available in capsule form with typical recommended dosages in the range of 200-600 mg per day, usually divided into three separate doses. Short cycles of moomiyo are recommended. That is, the herb should be taken for 10-12 days and then stopped for a few weeks. The cycle can then be repeated.

Despite its popularity, however, there is no published western data validating Moomiyo’s effects on performance or androgen production.

Trainers often recommend taking moomiyo during the last week of heavy training and then up to a week into recovery. While it often used in products known as an HGH stimulators, it is important to note that moomiyo is not a hormone and does not contain hormones. The herb can be used safely and does not appear to have any significant side effects.
