November 7, 2019 (4 pm - 5 pm ET)
Plant-Based Diets in Dialysis
The RENAL diet most often taught to patients has traditionally limited or excluded plant-based foods such as whole grains, beans, nuts, legumes, and many types of fruits and vegetables. Patients often struggle to understand these restrictions on seemingly healthy foods, and have difficulty adhering to such a limited diet. There is an emerging body of literature that indicates these recommendations are not consistent with the evidence, and that excluding heart-healthy plant-based foods is detrimental to ESRD patient health. In this webinar we'll review research showing that plant-based protein sources, fruits, and vegetables contain substances that benefit ESRD patients, and challenges how we define high quality protein choices for dialysis patients. Learn why we should absolutely be encouraging whole plant-based foods for our dialysis patients, and how we can support them in integrating these new recommendations.
Upon successful completion of this course, the participant should be able to:
Interpret and integrate evidence-based research and literature on increasing plant-based foods in the renal diet.
Apply evidence-based findings to improve the practice, service delivery, and health and nutrition of dialysis patients.
Assess the current knowledge and skills of your patient population to adopt plant-based eating.
Implement an individualized teaching plan that facilitates integration of plant-based eating.
